Open Educational Resources Job Talk: Developing, Promoting and Sustaining Liaison Librarian Roles
Description:
This project consisted of conducting a job search for a scholarly communications position, finding background information on the university via an environmental scan and taking on the persona of someone applying for the position. The Job Talk Video that resulted had to demonstrate an understanding of scholarly communications, both past and present, the interaction between society, technology and scholarly communications, and how trends are changing the academic and research environment. This video is a shorter version of an in class 20-minute presentation that included questions and answers, simulating the real interview process in an academic library setting.
There is no written version of the Job Talk, but a link has been provided down below.

Methods
This project consisted of multiple steps in research, writing and editing. To begin, I had to conduct a job search, create an environmental scan of the university selected, research the specific role being offered, as well as ways in which this role has been preformed by actual librarians, and create the job talk video. I used Power Point and Camtasia to make the video, making sure to match the color scheme with the university to exemplify my understanding of their brand. I also had to do extensive research on Open Educational Resources and make apparent why I thought they were important and ways in which a liaison librarian can contribute to promotion and use.
My Role
I was the sole creator of this project.

Communication
Reflective Practice
Rationale: Communication
Rationale: Reflective Practice
Through this project I was able to create a central argument that was articulated for a very specific audience. By demonstrating an understanding of scholarly communications and the position being applied to, I was able to use language that was clear and appropriate for the purpose of the video. This project not only exemplifies my communication skills but also illustrates my editing skills and creativity. With a clear goal and articulated purpose, the job talk video conveys my understanding of the position being applied to, communication networks within the academic and scholarly world and Open Educational Resources.
By creating a central argument within a specific professional context, I was able to showcase my understanding of current trends within the field, as well as advocate for practices that reflect relevance and leadership within academic librarianship. This project places the position of an OER librarian within the context of the academic world and within the larger movement towards open resources. Advocacy for open resources showcase an ethical understanding of issues currently within academic journals and the role of access in library and information studies.
